magtheridon down, master brewer's first!

Bigfoot's review from Master Brewers (Trollbane EU) fight vs Maggy:

After some success taking our first look at Maggy on Sunday night the Monday run that had been scheduled to Tempest Keep had been changed to a second visit to this boss. This had resulted in a few extra signups but with us also having some cancellations for real-life stuff the raid too a while to get going as Stabila tried to put together a group. It wasn't looking too hopeful as we scratched around for tanks and the odd healer, the option of ZA there should we want it, but with the delayed start a few folks that were not going to be around until past 21.00 Game Time were able to come on and help us fill the raid, whilst a couple of others switched to alternate characters to ensure we had all the bases covered in terms of add control etc. So it was then that the following 25 people headed off to the instance at the foot of Hellfire Citadel:

Whilst we had about 5 people that hadn't been there on Sunday the trash wasn't much of an issue though it should be noted that when they death coil / fear they wipe aggro and tend to go for healers next, so if we have enough tanks in future we should use "catchers" in the same way that we sometimes do on Gruul's trash.

Onto the main event then and after setting out who was doing what and where we began with ruthless efficiency working our way through the channelers. In pretty much every attempt our performance on this phase of the fight was uniformly excellent, we perhaps losing a sum total of less than 5 people across all the attempts during this opening section when an Infernal got loose or someone pulled aggro for no obvious reason. Typically we would be onto the last channeler by the time the boss spawned which was pretty impressive.

My memory of each attempt is a little hazy as I'm on my first coffee of the day, but the opener was one of our best attempts as we did well on the cubes and were able to get past the 30% AoE damage, only wiping I think because we lost a few folks around 1 particular cube and this meant that our timing got out of sync. I think we wiped on around 19% but I may be wrong, it might have been lower.

Our strategy for the cubes was to have Malkar, Khray, the 2 locks and one mage handling them, with a back-up clicker assigned to each. The reason for having two "melee" on the cubes was that Malkar was reduced to off-healing for the fight, whilst Khray was doing just sunders and thunderclap, their good HP also helping to sustain the damage better. As mentioned in Sunday's raid review the extra HP of the locks and their ability to absorb shadow damage also helped.

With regards to the subsequent attempts we had they ranged from the agonisingly close to the nowhere near, such is the nature of this fight really where the clicking of the cubes at the right moment decides your fate. A click too soon and it was a wipe, a click too late and the damage we all took would be too severe. As with the pull on High-King the timing is everything and we almost had it down when we wiped on 9%, the next go not quite as good but we deciding to give it one final effort as we past 00.00 Game Time.

The last go of the night turned out to be the magic one for us as we nailed each aspect of the encounter. We lost nobody in the opening phase and began the second phase well with some very nicely timed cube pressing. The DPS was solid and to give you an idea of the timescale I popped Heroism right at the start on the first channeler and it came off the 10 minute cooldown with the boss on 3%, so he went down in about 8 minutes of DPS on him, the first 2 minutes of the fight being the channeler section. On this go we didn't lose anyone to standing in the fire or being tossed in front of him and cleaved, everyone surviving the AoE damage at 30% which came at a good time in between Blast Novas as we measured our DPS to avoid having it right at the same moment. We didn't lose anyone on the debris from the ceiling that pops up in random areas during the final 30% and we in fact ended the fight with all 25 people alive, as it should be, only for Lucky to go and run into some fire as he tried to do the looting. After ressing Lucky and looting our Badges (3 from this boss) we posed for photos before sorting out the drops.

Whilst the Maggy fight itself has been made less complicated in the recent patch his loot has also been buffed. You now receive more gold - 500g I think I read - whilst also getting a 20 slot bag for one lucky person and a big bag of gems, consisting of some epic uncut gems. These will go to the guild bank and be distributed when people get the recipes from the new Sunwell faction, though there may be some cost for requesting them as they are very expensive to buy in the AH. I'm not actually sure who received the [Pit Lord's Satchel] as it was the last of the items to be rolled on but I do know that Redlaz pocketed [Magtheridon's Head] which he turned into the [Ring of the Recalcitrant] whilst also receiving 1000 Honor Hold rep and 25g. As with Onyxia you only receive 1 bag and 1 head and though the rings are nice they aren't quite on the same level of niceness as Onyxia's were back when we did her which is why tanks aren't given priority.

With regards to the non-set items that dropped we might have had better luck, though [Eredar Wand of Obliteration] isn't bad I wouldn't say its phenomenal either as the Tirisfal wand in Kara is pretty nice, Samcarter winning the roll here against some of the Mages and the Locks, whilst Khray took the [Thundering Greathelm] uncontested with no Plate DPS in the raid at all.

The Tier 4 was however much more in demand, as you would expect for the first time we had seen any T4 chest items. We received one of each token with the [Chestguard of the Fallen Champion] finding its way to Stabs on the set bonus rule, some of us already having 4 pieces and he beating those that did not, meaning he can drop some PvP items now for PvE gear. The [Chestguard of the Fallen Defender] went to Cyronix by main priority on the set bonus, giving him 4 pieces I think with him having picked up at least one the night before in Gruul, whilst the [Chestguard of the Fallen Hero] ended up with Violica.

There was a resounding cheer on TS when the boss died and I think most people would agree this was a great moment for the Brewers, especially with it coming just a day after perhaps our first ever one-shot kills on both High-King and Gruul in the same run. Certainly if we get the same focus as we did on this run then Maggy shouldn't pose any problems in the future meaning more and more people should be receiving their T4 chests in the coming weeks, very useful gearing up as we look to head further into 25 man places.
