desktop linux users doubled

Some great news from desktoplinux.com! They recently revealed the desktop survey results. The facts are there, the number of desktop linux users has doubled the last year!

And what is the desktop linux users distribution of choice? The Ubuntu family (Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, Edubuntu) leads on, and SuSe is the second runner up.

To read all the survey results, go to desktoplinux.com us flag.

The survey shows us that more and more people are trying out a GNU/Linux distro, more and more people are getting aware that they can choose their OS. Up until Dell started to cooperate with Ubuntu, we had to accept that a PC you ordered came with a MS OS install (unless you bought parts and built your own pc).

Sure ;) The application is called gDesklets. With gDesklets, you can add almost anything to your GNU/Linux desktop. Visit the site http://www.gdesklets.de/ . To install gDesklets just type this in bash: sudo apt-get install gdesklets

Amazing how Ubuntu has taken over the Linux market -- especially for Linux Desktop distributions. It will be interesting to see if Dell's involvement with Ubuntu helps or hurts the distribution in the long run.

I hope Dell starts giving the choice of Ubuntu on all systems. Dell has a lot of good deals, but if they could knock off the price of Windows that would rule!

I too have bee really impressed with Ubuntu. I have yet to make the leap and actually setup a Linux box, but I am excited to try it out when I get my new computer. -- Max ... Out! http://www.cmyos.com - free online operating system

How did you get panel bar black like that and where did you get your background image?

Jone E: That is a very simple setting. You can change the background color of the panel by either changing the theme (gnome-look.org) or setting the properties of the panel itself. The pic I believe can be found on interfacelift.com

Yes , Ubuntu has really stolen the Desktop market. The ease with which a person can get started using ubuntu Distribution is amazing. They also ship proprietary packages that makes it even more simpler to use additional hardware.I should say Ubuntu has revolutionized desktop Linux

For those interested in playing around with linux, I would reccomend either installing VMWare Player or VMWare Server. Player is much more simple, but a bit limited. Both are free for Windows and Linux. http://www.vmware.com/products/player/ Then all you need to do is install a VM from their website on VMWare Player, or create a new one if you are using Server. http://www.vmware.com/appliances/ I personally am a Red Hat snob (hey at least I admit it :D ). Fedora is a great Linux to use, but I will admit, Ubuntu is a bit better at this time for Windows or Mac converts. If Freespire would fix CNR so it would work correctly, I would. But since it isn't I will warn you. When using Server, you can use the .iso files that each distribution puts out to install, so that cuts on wasting CD-Rs or DVD+-Rs to use to try them out too. To try out Linux - the simplest way would be to use the ubuntu installation cd to run in live mode. That is - run the operating system direct from the cd without touching your hard disk. Can be slow but you'll get an idea of how it works and hardware compatibility.

Wow, No. 13's comment made him look really cool. **rolling eyes** To add to comment no.11.. If you want to try Linux on a Windows box, goto www.virtualbox.org and check that out. It's similar to VMPlayer but much easier to set up. Current I have WinXP running inside Ubuntu on a MACG4, and everything runs perfect. Give it a whirl.

"The facts are there, the number of desktop linux users has doubled the last year!" No, the facts are that the number of respondents to this years desktop linux survey was twice that of last years. Which probably has more to do with the fact that it got dugg this year than anything else.

Well I switched and won't go back. I got the wife and son on board too, though the son dual boots for games. Easiest way for me to introduce them was Wubi. Great little program that installs Linux as a file. Tried Mint (loved it), Fedora7 (not so much), Suse (fair), Ubuntu (found a home!). Fyi this is a fairly high end gamer system (64 bit, 8800gtx video, dual core etc) bought it expecting to use Vista, but switched to Linux and everything went fine. Yeah it took a day to get my Brother fax and the video right (22" lcd) but well worth the time. No more " we crashed last night and can't figure out why" notices in the morning. Cart

Wow, nice to have so many comments. Not nice to have comment number 13 though. Number 15: I know I could be more presice with that sentence, it could sounded more like "The facts are, that the number of Desktop Linux Users has grown" or something like that. Thanks for the input. Number 16: You go man! The best wishes with the distros and your family!

I made the switch to Ubuntu Feisty Fawn about a month ago and have booted into XP about twice in that time. Although it takes a bit of getting used to, I really like the repository of software, all free and right there when you need it. I've also installed Beryl (search it on youtube) which produces amazing destop effects that have blown away my Vista using friends - all on a PC that's aver 4 years old running it with no problems! I don't consider myself to be an expert computer user either - so if I can do it, I'm sure many others can do the same should they wish.

Unfortunately or otherwise, I think we are in a dual-boot or Virtual world for maybe quite a while. Feisty is sensational, my Vista is terrible (longing for XP) but some things I now do require steps 1 & 2 on Linux then steps 3 & 4 on Windows because of apps that run only on one or the other.

I know we added a few to that number:) I discovered Ubuntu 4 months after first sitting down at a computer last Spring and dumped Windows about week later.Myself and all the kids have used Linux now for over a year and none of us would have it any other way. They have Windows access if needs be but even my 6 Yr old will reboot if their machine is somehow left on XP.... Best thing that could have happened for this families venture into the crazy world of computers was the discovery of Ubuntu.

I have been using Ubuntu since 5.10 and have to say each iteration is a revolution. I can't wait till Compiz Fusion becomes fully stable. That should scare both Microsoft and Apple. I really would like to here someone's comment on this, "All linux needs is a killer application" Is that a fair statement or arrogance on the part of the linux community?

SwordSaint: A very good point there. The statement aint flawless, due to the fact that GNU/Linux has got many killer applications. IMHO the problem lies in the fact that the Commercial Software Industry and the Gaming Industry don't see a market in GNU/Linux..

I recently bought a new laptop for work, it was an average spec running Vista. My staff complained so bitterly about the slow boot up and bloatware on it that I switched it to Ubuntu. This was despite not having any experience with Linux. Since then I've switched all of our little company (5 staff) to Ubuntu. Sadly there's 1 XP pc with proprietary stuff from 2 of the shipping companies we use. I'll need to find a VM when I have some spare time... I couldn't believe how easy the whole transfer was and now much quicker we work. I've spent years and $000's battling windows and office. A new set of licenses for each new employee etc. I'm glad things are finally moving on.

ubuntu, simply great! Thanks for the comunity that keeps developing it! Many thanks for giving me the opportunity to almost forget xp. An opinion: first, start to offer professional tools for designers! (the world if full of designers). Then, a professional tool for bibliographic citations, professional research. The world will be ubuntu. ;)
